Four years ago, I held out hope John Kerry would take the White House, I stayed up through the night once more to see the results unfold in the American Presidential Election, only this time I had a stronger belief that it might have a happy and historic ending.
I was surprised that so many other friends also stayed up to watch the result as previously, politics have never been of mutual interest, however with this man Barack Obama, he has transcended politically minded people and engaged people apathetic towards politics, people who wouldn't normally follow events and he has instilled a belief amongst the masses that things could actually change. He should thank George W Bush for being such an awful president that America has put aside it's cultural bigotry and elected the best man for the job. I worry, like so many, that some right wing nutcase will take a shot at this person threatening real change, it's happened in the past. When Robert Kennedy threatened to challenge the countries deeply entrenched beliefs and prejudices, he never quite made it into power. I pray that this time, it's different, that now, he is given the chance to change how the world sees the United States of America and to restore some pride to American people.
His acceptance speech was engaging, uplifting and powerful, he spoke with intelligence, eloquence and dignity, he reached out to everybody in the Country and whether he knows it or not, he reached out to the world.
Yes, it has surprised me, the level of interest my friends had for world politics last night. And now I hope that this inspiring man can be given the chance to lead this hugely powerful nation out of the troubles it has faced in this new millennium and to restore some pride it has lost since September 11th 2001.
How important might the 4th November 2008 be in history I wonder?
